About Aldeburgh
Aldeburgh has always been closely linked to the sea. In Tudor times fishing and shipbuilding were important sources of local employment. Two of Sir Francis Drake’s ships are recorded as being built at Aldeburgh, Greyhound and Pelecan – the later renamed Golden Hind on his voyage around the world. The Moot Hall is a prominent feature. In the middle of the 16th century it stood in the centre of the town and now is just behind the beach!
Mid – eighteenth Aldeburgh is described as “a poor and wretched place with nothing of elegance and gaiety”. However, the fortunes of the town began to improve as the fashion for visiting the seaside grew in the early 19th century. The Marques of Salisbury has a summer residence built on the cliff top, one of several fine Georgian and Victorian buildings. The coming of the Railway in 1860 was a welcome boost for the town; The railway was primarily constructed to serve the Engineering works of Lieston and Garrett. This also assisted in boosting the local fishing industry as the catch could now speedily get to the London markets.
Aldeburgh Festival
The first woman to qualify as a Doctor in Britain was a resident of Aldeburgh. Dr Elizabeth Garrett Anderson was born in 1860 and later became Mayor of Aldeburgh, the first female Mayor in Britain.

When events are running during the Aldeburgh Festival, coaches are available between the Aldeburgh Festival High Street Box Office and the Snape Maltings site.
