Moving to New Zealand – Biosecurity Quarantine Changes

For customers planning on moving to New Zealand, Abels Moving Services have been made aware that from the 1st June 2015 a new Biosecurity Quarantine process will be implemented.

The changes will come into effect on the 1st June 2015 for all shipments of Household Goods and Personal Effects. The change will effect items that enter New Zealand in Full Container Loads (FCL), Groupage Shipping Containers, Less than Container Loads (LCL) or those arriving in New Zealand via Airfreight.

The key change is that all household goods and personal effects can no longer be delivered directly from the port / airport to the customers residence. The change involves devanning of the goods into an Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) approved transitional facility (warehouse). At the warehouse MPI can inspect and carryout Biosecurity and Quarantine inspections on any of the items it wishes. Once the inspection is completed the items are reloaded for delivery to the customers premises.

The process involves an additional step in the delivery process in New Zealand and this is likely to effect the overall cost and timescales for delivery of shipments when moving to New Zealand.

The following information and briefing has been supplied to Abels Moving Services from the New Zealand Overseas Moving Association about the Biosecurity changes:
