Moving to New Zealand – Importing Wooden Items

  • News

Abels Moving Services have been advised in connection with changes from the 4th September 2017 in connection with importing wooden items into New Zealand.

Kindly find below changes in the treatment options when importing woodenware including furniture ( old and new ) into New Zealand.

One option is to get the items ( or the container ) fumigated from the country of origin provided it complies with the New Zealand standard ( follow link below ) and the Fumigation company is on the list of MPI accredited service providers.

Second and last option is to import without fumigation but to undergo the compulsory inspection and hopefully NZ Quarantine will release the items without requiring treatment.

Refer to below extracted from MPI website pertaining to the changes :

Changes in Treatment Options for Imported Woodware

From 4 September 2017 the practice of fumigation on arrival in New New Zealand of wood ware products ( includes personal effects ) will no longer be provided by MPI ( NZ Quarantine ) as an option for goods imported under the MPI Import Health Standards for Wood ware from all Countries www.mpi.govt.nz/dmsdocument/1221 As New Zealand is a signatory to the Montreal Protocol ( an international environmental treaty designed to limit the use of substances that deplete the ozone layer ). MPI will immediately move to reduce on-arrival fumigation with methyl bromide. Historically, MPI has allowed untreated wood ware (including furniture) to be treated on arrival in New Zealand as an alternative to inspection. However, now there will be two options for woodenware products arriving in New Zealand.

These are :

1. Fumigation in the country of origin prior to shipment ( with a compliant offshore fumigation certificate )

2. MPI inspection on arrival with any treatment decision made at the time on a case-by-case basis.

This means all Transitional Facilities importing goods under the above standard must have approval to receive timber products. Any Transitional Facility that does not have approval to receive timber products will be required to apply for an upgrade to their Transitional Facility Approval in order to receive wood ware products in the future.
