Strikes Result in Shipping Delays For Customers Moving to Nigeria

Shipping delays and Airfreight delays for customers moving to Nigeria

We have been informed by our FIDI – Faim accredited partners in Nigeria of current problems in Nigeria as follows:

A nationwide strike in Nigeria starting on the 9th January is likely to cause disruption to all shipping operations to and from the country and will effect airfreight to Nigeria and airfreight shipments out from Nigeria.  They  are currently unsure when operations will return to normal.

Our partners expects disruption to its logistical operations as well as its interaction with port authorities, airports and customs, with the likely result of shipping delays.

It is expected that there will be a backlog of airfreight and port congestion whilst held containers are cleared from and through the port resulting from the strikes when the workers finally return to work.  The extent or the congestion depends on the period length of the strike.

The strike was declared by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to protest against the removal of a fuel subsidy which led to recent petrol price hikes throughout the country.

The Nigerian Port Authority (NPA) has confirmed that the ports will be closed from Monday, 9th January, 2012.  Air space was closed on Sunday, 8th January, 2012 and all air transport was grounded by midnight.
