Previously Abels had been advised that shipping routes to Qatar had been suspended due to political unrest in the Persian Gulf.
We have now been updated that several shipping companies are expected to provide a service to Qatar by providing a revised service via the port of Salalah in Oman.
Before the political unrest in the Persian Gulf involving Qatar all carriers transhipped containers being sent to Hamad Port in Qatar at Jebel Ali in the United Arab Emirates.
However as the UAE have now withdrawn all relations with Qatar the service of transhipping in the UAE at Jebel Ali is no longer in use.
The carriers are looking at other ways to get cargo to Qatar and it is expected that APL, MSC, Maersk and Safmarine will route containers via Salalah in Oman.
MSC has advised that for this revised service they require an additional on-carry fee for the new routing. We have yet to hear from the other carriers if they will charge an additional on-carry fee.
Therefore, until the matter is 100% resolved rates for moves to Qatar are expected to be higher.
