Moving to Shanghai in China – Customs Requirements

  • News

For customers planning on Moving to Shanghai in China, Abels Moving Services have been made aware by our shipping agents that existing customs rules on entry of household goods to Shanghai are to be clearly enforced.

Effective November 1, 2015 Shanghai Customs is again applying an existing rule for foreign passport holders. Only long term transferees (with either their work permit or residence permit more than 365 days) are allowed to bring household goods into Shanghai, China.

In the past, Shanghai customs either accepted 10-12 months validity on the permit or charged full duties to allow the shipment into Shanghai. Now this is no longer the case. Shanghai customs suggests to amend the related permit to be at or more than 365 days, otherwise they will refuse the import of household goods from here on in.

It is suggested that when moving to Shanghai in China that those moving with household goods consult with their employer and immigration agent to ensure that their permit can be issued more than 365 days. Their employment contract is suggested to be signed with or more than 365 days.

Shanghai customs has currently agreed to cope with shipments with “Actual Time of Arrival” on and before Nov 15, 2015 by getting special approval by senior customs officers in Customs.
