Moving to Manchester from within the UK or from Europe is usually by road. The method used if moving from further overseas depends upon preference and/or the original location, and could be by air or by sea. Abels has produced some guidance on the different methods to help you select the right mode for your move.
Manchester is England’s second city in terms of population, after London, with some 2.2 million inhabitants. Much of its growth of the city was as a result of the industrial revolution in the 19th century, with large textiles and engineering activities across the area. These traditional industries have declined during the 20th century, and today Manchester has a more service-based economy.
The centre of the city was badly damaged in 1997 by an IRA bomb, but the rebuilding sparked a renaissance in the city. It hosted the 2002 Commonwealth Games, the largest sporting event ever held in England, surpassing the 1948 London Olympics.
Manchester is becoming increasingly appealing for many reasons. The city is diverse in terms of ethnicity as well as opportunity. The contrasting and complex range of architecture varies from antiquated Victorian red brick buildings to ultra-modern skyscrapers, with present-day construction continuing apace.
The city of Manchester can perhaps be divided into two halves, with residents split between supporting two football clubs: the gargantuan Manchester United and smaller Manchester City, now occupying the City of Manchester stadium, built for the 2002 Commonwealth Games. Manchester United is the world’s largest and most supported football club, although urban legend denotes that the majority of Manchester United supporters have never actually been to the city.
Manchester has long been a name synonymous with the British “indie” music scene. Groups such as Oasis, The Stone Roses, The Verve and The Smiths are all exports of the place known as “Madchester”. Add Take That, The Beegees, Elkie Brooks, 10cc and the list just goes on…!
