Robert Crosthwaite retires, Abels Moving ServicesRobert Crosthwaite, 61, who lives in Saham Toney, Norfolk, has retired as financial director from Abels Moving Services after 22 years’ service.

Robert’s association with Abels started in 1980 when he was offered the post of general manager, and then went on to grow the business from a turnover of 1 million to 9 million. He then left in 1992 and set up his own management consultancy advising many well known local firms. In addition he spent four years importing and selling American furniture into the UK. However, he rejoined Abels in 1998 after accepting an invitation to participate in a management buyout of the company, and became its financial director, responsible for IT, finance and marketing.

He has also been involved in supporting various East Anglian businesses, including as a director and latterly chairman of Norfolk Training Services, a part-time consultant for Business Link and setting up a free listing website to help local firms, www.countylifecompanion.co.uk.

Within the moving and logistics industry, Robert has served as the president of the British Association of Removers (BAR) and was a board member of the Road Transport Industry Training Board.

Robert Crosthwaite said: “I have enjoyed tremendously my time at Abels and proud to have worked with such an enthusiastic and professional team of people.”

Philip Pertoldi, Abels’ group managing director, said: “Much of Abels’ success stems from Robert’s work. Not only in finance, but also IT systems, which as our business is based on logistics is absolutely crucial. He has left a legacy that will help us to retain our industry leading position, based on quality of service excellence. He will also be missed by all of us at Abels and we wish Robert all the best in his retirement.”

Robert will not be short of things to do in retirement. He is setting up a new website based business, building a Finnish-style log lodge in Scotland, and has a 20ft model railway project in his home.
