The city was one of the most important in the 11th century, second in size only to London. Due to its location, the city did not grow as fast as others during the Industrial Revolution, and currently has a population of around 138,000,

Norwich has two local papers: the Eastern Daily Press and Eastern Evening News. Apart from the BBC, the local broadcasters are ITV Anglia, formerly Anglia Television, Norwich Radio, Heart and Gold.

The city is home to Norwich Union Insurance Company, now called Aviva, the world-famous Colman’s Mustard brand, now part of Unilever, and Norwich City Football Club. Comedian Steve Coogan and television cook and author Delia Smith both come from Norwich, as does Elizabeth Fry, actor Sir John Mills and Lord Nelson.
